Environment protection projects

Projects, related to environment protection

The construction of new and the recultivation of old landfills for domestic solid waste, in parallel with the construction of treatment plants, is one of the great challenges for Bulgaria in connection with the implementation of the Environment operational program. The topic of waste has always had a strong social resonance and is often the cause of heated polemics in the media space. Our team has participated in the projects for several municipal waste landfills in Bulgaria.

Regional landfill for domestic solid waste of Gabrovo and Tryavna

In the past, the landfill in question was an unregulated dump with an area of about 140 dka and was used even during the communist period. The problems are related to the large amount of accumulated waste and the choice of technology for pre-disposal and reclamation. In addition, the generated leachate easily seeps in front of the soil and falls into the karst limestone, which in some places is exposed directly on the field. It can be seen from the photos that the leachate was collecting in front of the fence dike, with some of it seeping through a large cavern at the base of the dike and another part going over the dike and into a nearby gully. Since the landfill is operational, it was necessary to choose such an option, in which, in parallel with the construction of new cells and the redeposition of the accumulated old waste, it would be possible to deposit new ones. The geological conditions of the terrain are unfavourable, which made it necessary to build high-quality isolation membranes, guaranteeing that no infiltrate is allowed into the natural terrain. Engineers designed an osmotic unit to purify the leachate to a dischargeable state. In parallel there was implemented a program for monitoring of surface and underground water and soils.

Johnson Electric - Environmental Assessment of Wastewater Treatment Plant Site, Nis, Serbia

The NATO bombing of Yugoslavia was a military operation carried out by 11 NATO member states against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia during the Kosovo War. The strikes began on 24 March 1999 and ended on 11 June 1999. In this regard, it was necessary to carry out an environmental impact assessment of a treatment plant site in Nis – Serbia. For this purpose, manual boreholes were made to sample and analyze the soil and water for contamination.

Project BG0036 – “For a better environment – Study and prediction of potential environmental pollution from waste landfills”. Development of a comprehensive strategy for exploration and sampling of groundwater in the areas of the selected pilot landfills in the lands of Hristiyanovo/Bogomilovo, Gorna Oryahovitsa, Buchino, Bogdan and Belene in accordance with the technical requirements.

Khan Bogrov, Sofia - radiation protection program

Radiation protection program implemented by the “Egersman&Ko” consortium during the implementation of the project. Municipal waste management of the city of Sofia – composting facility near Khan Bogrov. Hydrochemical maps of the radiological pollution in the area of the site were prepared.

Municipal landfill for solid domestic waste - town of Perushtitsa

In addition to the morphological analysis, when choosing a technological scheme for the construction of the landfills, it is very important to determine the volume of waste in the landfills. This is most often done with geophysical surveys.
